What the hell is fracking?

The new technology used to get shale gas that has been used for over 30 years now.

The fracking method consists in injecting water at high pressure into the rocks at over 3,000 meters depth. The natural gas contained for thousands of years into those rocks is then extracted. Half the natural gas consumed in the US will come from shale gas in 2035.

Shale gas emits half the CO2 that coal does. If all vehicles used natural gas instead of diesel or gasoline, CO2 emissions would be reduced by 90%, according to the Department of Energy of the US.

Are the cons really true?

Some people argue that fracking uses a lot of water. That is true: 30% of the water is lost forever. The key is to use water that cannot be used for common purposes.

Some people argue there have been two drinkable water contaminations so far in the US. True again: fracking was too close to those public deposits of drinking water. The key is to garantee safety measures.

And some people say that fracking produces small earthquakes. False: there is NO chance for that to happen.

The only real con is that fracking makes coal expensive and dirty, and people do not want to use it in the US, therefore coal prices went down over 33% in 2012. So they are selling coal all over the world, at cheaper prices. That is bad because Europeans went back to coal, increasing contamination, instead of using other clean and expensive energies.
