A baby born with HIV has been cured with drugs for the first time

Infected cells did not re-emerge after stopping the drugs because they were administered right after birth.

The baby was born at a Mississippi hospital. Her mother did not know she was HIV positive and did not get any treatment for her or her baby. But since the baby had signs of the virus just 30 hours after birth, she was given the standard three drugs cocktail treatment. The mother stopped the medication after 18 months.

Doctors cannot find any trace of the virus on the now 2.5 years old girl. There is a risk the HIV virus can resurface or mutate after stopping medication.

300,000 children are infected each year worldwide

The combined treatment included lamivudine and zidovudine, produced by GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, and Abbott Laboratories. Other HIV researchers include Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and Gilead.

Glaxo and Abbott are the best companies to invest in, because they are cheap to run and the market price and debt levels are attractive. Then it would be, in this order, Johnson & Johnson, Gilead, and Pfizer. Their PER are higher, but they have a decent debt ratio.

And Merck would be the last choice because it is very expensive to run, its PER is too high, and its debt ratio is higher than the others.

Investing in Glaxo and Abbott could be a nice way to help them finding a cure for AIDS and, should they do, to make some money at the same time.
